The latest 9km by 9am walk takes us to the magnificent Wales Coastal Path. Take a look at Nigel's experience on this trail and add it to your list of walks to complete in 2022!
A 12KM walk along the Wales Coastal Path from the Newport Wetlands Nature Reserve ending up at the Riverfront Arts Centre & Theatre in the heart of Newport, on he bank of the River Usk.
This group walk was held as part of the celebrations of the Path’s 10 year anniversary and was led by TV, podcast and radio presenter Chris Jones and supported by Tricia Cottman from Wales Coastal Path. See https://www.walescoastpath.gov...
It was a glorious sunny October day with Newport, the River Usk and the Coastal Path scenery glistening.
The Wales Coastal Path is a long-distance trail, which follows the coastline of Wales. Launched in 2012, the path is 870 miles (1,400 km) long and was heralded as the first dedicated coast path in the world to cover the entire length of a country's coastline. I have walked many sections of the path, which offers some of the most spectacular views on the planet. Yes I might be biased, being Welsh!
We walked through the Nature Reserve, which is made up of a diverse range of low-lying habitats, including wet grassland, reedbeds, saltmarsh and saline lagoons. There's plenty to do here with a number of walking trails including: an Orchid Trail, Sculpture Trail, Woodland and Estuary Trail and a Green Lanes and Coastal Walk. See their website at https://www.rspb.org.uk/reserv...
The walk took us past the Newport Transporter Bridge one of three in the UK, with only six operational worldwide. The bridge opened in 1906 and has dominated the Newport skyline since. A transporter bridge is basically a suspended ferry. A high level boom allows ships to pass underneath is suspended from towers at each end. The boom carries a rail track on which a moving carriage or ‘traveller’ runs. A gondola or platform is suspended from the carriage and can be pulled from one side of the river to the other by means of a hauling cable.
It is closed until Spring 2023 whilst it undergoes restoration but the group were lucky enough to get an exclusive demonstration ride from one side of the Usk to the other and back. See https://www.newport.gov.uk/her..
The walk took around 3 hours in total including stops for talks and a trip on the Transporter Bridge.
Definitely recommend.
PARKING: This was a linear walk from the Wetlands Nature Reserve to the Riverfront Arts Centre. We took taxis to the Reserve and walked back to the Arts Centre, where there is ample parking.
WALK ELEVATION: 48 Metres
DATE OF WALK: 11.30 – 14.45, 22 October 2022
