What to Wear When You Go Camping

Camping is a joy for many people. People not only camp in the woods but in deserts, jungles, and mountains. They camp not only during mild weather but in the winter when the ground is blanketed with snow and the air temperatures are bitter. Because people camp in so many climates and environments, one thing to know when it comes to camping is what to wear. Here are some tips.

Why Wearing the Right Clothes When Camping Is Important

Clothing worn for even a brief time in the wilderness is different from everyday wear. The clothes worn every day are largely for modesty, comfort and to frankly show off the wearer’s fashion style. Clothes worn for camping are worn to maintain the health of the body in a natural setting. This is especially important if the camper will be in an area known for extreme weather.

Experts recommend that a person think of layers when they’re camping. Even if they expect the weather to be warm, nights can still be surprisingly chilly, and layers can be taken off if they’re not needed. Four layers are recommended.

The core layer

This layer lies against the skin and should have a close fit without being too tight. The material should be lightweight, able to wick away sweat, and needs to be kept clean.

The second layer

The second layer should be more loose-fitting while protecting the neck and the wrists. Ideally, it should have long sleeves that are easy to roll up and cuffs with snaps or buttons. In a hot area, the second layer can serve as the outer layer.

The third layer

If a third layer is needed, it should be a sweater made of wool or a fleece jacket that can be easily taken off. The camper might need to take it off if they are active, even in a cold climate.

The outer layer

The outer layer should be a wind and/or waterproof jacket, depending on the climate. At the same time, the jacket should be able to be vented to keep the camper from becoming overheated.

Underwear and pants

Long underwear is usually only necessary in cold weather. Ideally, pants should be either waterproof or able to dry quickly.

Footwear

Proper footwear is essential for a safe camping experience. Boots are the best type of footwear, and there are boots made especially for the desert, the snow, or even the jungle. Socks should be paired with boots, and depending on the environment, a camper may want an inner pair of socks and an outer pair of socks. The goal of boots and socks is to support the camper even as they may be carrying heavy equipment through rough terrain and to keep the feet warm and dry.

Tips and Tricks for Preparing for a Camping Trip

There are many tips and tricks to use to make a camping trip both safe and fun. Here are some of them.

Utilize Gaiters

Gaiters are a good investment. These garments are pulled over the camper’s boots and the bottom of their pant legs to keep them dry if the camper is walking through mud, water or snow.

Pack a Survival Kit

A camper should pack a survival kit of humble and simple items that can keep them out of trouble. They include:

● Wire

● Swiss Army knife

● Safety pins

● Fishing line and hooks

● Bandaids

● Needles, thread, and buttons

● Plastic bags

● Magnifying glass

● A compass and physical map because a smartphone may not work where the camper is

Don’t Forget Plastic Dinnerware

Pack plates, mugs, or cups made of plastic, wood, or melamine. They'll add weight, but they keep campers safe. Despite what's seen in all those westerns, eating directly from a pot over a campfire is dangerous. It can cause burns that can become infected.

Wear Sunscreen

Even dark-skinned campers should avail themselves of sunscreen. It's especially needful for desert campsites and campsites high in the mountains
