Nigel is the founder of REROOT YOURSELF™ - a detailed look at the science behind nature and wellness, helping busy people with limited time tap into the art of forest bathing and the healing power of nature.
Throughout June I’ll be sharing tips and insights on how to Forest Bathe exclusively on 9KM BY 9AM and the Outside & Active website.
A 30-minute forest bathe once or twice a week will help you slow down. It will bring you into the present moment and de-stress and relax you.
WHAT IS FOREST BATHING?
A central part of my early morning walks is the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku.
In Japanese, SHINRIN means ‘forest’ and YOKU means ‘bath’. The practice of Shinrin Yoku goes back hundreds of years but the term was coined recently by Tomohide Akiyama of the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries in 1982 to get the Japanese population fit and healthy.
FOREST BATHING is simply being in nature and connecting with it through the five senses - sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.
By practising Shinrin Yoku we reroot ourselves, reconnect our bodies to the way we lived a few hundred years ago and to which our bodies have evolved and are accustomed… THIS IS WHY IT FEELS SO DAMN GOOD!
Forest Bathing enables you to bring the peace and the awareness that you cultivate in nature into all aspects of your daily life .
By learning how to harness the power of nature you can forest bathe when it suits you – in your office, on your way to work, at lunchtime, in the park, in your garden; as well as in the wood and forest.
Through rerooting yourslef you can massively improve your mental and physical well-being, you re-connect with the natural world and become more mindful about the changes in nature that are happening all around you.
