Global Running Day is celebrated on the 7th June and this year I have put together a list of 5 podcasts with guests that will inspire, educate and entertain you on your running journey. Whether you are looking for a new challenge, or simply want some company on your Sunday run, here are 5 podcasts you should add to your download list.

1) Eilish McColgan - Becoming a Commonwealth Gold Medalist

Eilish McColgan is a world-renowned Scottish middle and long-distance runner. She began running at the age of seven, and she quickly developed an intense passion for the sport. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, she won a bronze medal in the 3000m steeplechase event. After her success there, she went on to take fourth place at the European Championships in Barcelona in 2010 and third place at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Since then, Eilish has gone on to become one of Scotland's most decorated middle and long-distance runners ever. In 2016, Eilish won gold at the European Championships in Amsterdam and silver at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon. Her career highlights have also included victories at prestigious meets like the Diamond League meetings in Zurich and Brussels as well as gold medals at both the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Off of the track, Eilish has also achieved great success academically as she holds a BSc Honours degree in Sport Science from Stirling University (2015). She is also an ambassador for various charitable organizations such as Right To Play UK & Ireland and The British Heart Foundation Scotland to name a few.

Eilish enjoyed a superb 2022 - winning a storybook Commonwealth gold and breaking Liz's Scottish 10,000m record in Hengelo.

She has had a phenomenal career full of achievements so far and continues to inspire athletes all over the world with her commitment to excellence both on and off of track.

2) Sally McRae - The yellow runner

Sally McRae is a world-renowned ultra-distance trail runner and motivational speaker. She has achieved remarkable success in the trail running world, competing in some of the toughest ultra-distance races around the globe. Sally has raced in world famous ultra marathon events such as Leadville Trail 100, Transvulcania Ultramarathon, Badwater 135 , and the Ultra Trail Mt. Fuji.

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Sally is also an inspirational public speaker who spreads her message of motivation to audiences worldwide. Her talks often aim to provide listeners with stories of perseverance and determination while encouraging them to take control of their lives and find fulfillment through physical activity.

In this episode of the Outside & Active Podcast, we talk through Sally's rise in the ultra running world, her experiences at Badwater 135 and how she looks to support up and coming athletes in the industry.

3) Ben Parker - How to run a marathon

We are well and truly in marathon season which is why in this episode, we are offering tips, tricks and advice to those who have a marathon scheduled in.

Ben Parker is the Co-Founder & Head Coach at Runna, a running platform that provides world-class training, coaching and community for everyone.

Ben has spent 5+ years as a professional running coach, helping everyone from beginner runners to elite athletes.

Ben is a qualified Personal Trainer, IRONMAN Coach, England Athletics Coach and Pilates Instructor.

In his spare time, Ben is a keen athlete himself, ranking top-5 in his age group for IRONMAN in the UK, and coming top-20 in the 2020 virtual London Marathon with a time of 2:34. Ben also recently qualified for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

4) David Hellard - The caffeinated Bad Boy runner

David Hellard is an adventurer, obstacle race enthusiast, ultra marathon runner, running journalist, founder of Caffeine Bullet and presenter on The Bad Boy Running Podcast.

David is also the co-funder of the hugely funny and popular Bad Boy Running Podcast. With an eye on just having the same conversations they’d have down the pub, the podcast quickly grew its following and features the most famous ultra runners in the world.

He has been presenting globally from the age of 13, from winning numerous startup pitch competitions to hosting at the biggest running event in the UK, The National Running Show.

If all of that wasn't enough, David is the founder of Caffeine Bullet, an energy chew formulated for performance in endurance sport and a product he took to the Dragon's Den. An experience we talk about in this weeks episode.

5) Bruce Fordyce - Bringing Parkrun to South Africa

Bruce Fordyce is the most well-known runner in South Africa, having won that country's internationally famous Comrades Marathon (54 miles) eight years in a row and nine times overall.

During that period, Fordyce could not compete internationally, due to South Africa's apartheid policies--which he actively campaigned against. Eventually, running and track and field were among the first sports to welcome participation by black South Africans.

Bruce is most proud of his 9 Comrades Marathons wins, in which he broke the course record 5 times.

In 2011, Park Run was born into South African communities thanks to Bruce Fordyce getting involved. He started Park Run in South Africa with the first event being held in Delta Park, Johannesburg. The first event was attended by 26 people and from there, the event has simply flourished.

O A IG 2023 04 04 T152111 566

Hi! I'm Dom and I am the Digital Communications Manager at Outside & Active. I manage the content and marketing for this site and sometimes document my experiences and thoughts. I absolutely love to be outside and active in any way possible.

I have been playing all varieties of sports since the age of 5 but in the past few years I have somehow become a 'runner'. This has opened my eyes to a whole new world of adventure, I still love playing team sports and heading to the gym - but managing this website has helped me explore different ways to enjoy the outdoors.
