Buzz Power Energy – good for performance, good for the environment and good for your pocket. What more could you ask for?
It’s two years since we launched Buzz Power Energy, the only carbohydrate supplement made from 100% pure organic honey with added sports electrolytes.
Honey is a natural health food and is easy to digest. Buzz Power Energy products are made with a naturally balanced blend of fast and slow release energy, provide fast mouth to muscle energy, and have a delicious taste with no nasty residue or aftertaste.
The idea for Buzz Power Energy came about quite by chance. After I retired, I took up beekeeping, and one day my son, Ed, who enjoys long distance cycling and triathlons, suggested I develop an energy gel based on raw honey. After two years’ research and development, we launched Buzz Power Energy in January 2020. My daughter Hannah joined up to manage our branding and marketing activities.
Honey is easy to digest, provides a natural mix of fast and slow release carbohydrate and has valuable antioxidant properties. The clincher was a comment on Runners’ World website “honey is the perfect running fuel!”
We were surprised to find out how much conventional maltodextrin-based energy gels were disliked by endurance sports people. Many people found they were difficult to digest with all sorts of unpleasant side effects. Also they can be sloppy and sticky, and could leave an unpleasant aftertaste.
Honey is a natural fuel developed over 100 million years of evolution, and is a perfect energy source for any endurance event. In fact that’s exactly what the bees use it for. They have to beat their wings over 12,000 times each minute to stay in the air, carrying up to 30% of their own body weight. Honey bees don’t sweat, so we added a blend of sodium chloride and a touch of potassium and magnesium to meet the needs of endurance athletes.
We’re just a small British family business but it’s been amazing how many customers have turned to Buzz Power Energy as their energy source of choice, how many repeat orders we receive from returning customers and the 5 star reviews they leave on our website www.buzz-power.co.uk. We regularly receive orders from abroad, not just the United States and Canada, but also the EU, Australia and the Middle East. Buzz Power has fuelled marathons, duathlons, trail running, cycling, hiking – indeed any form of sports, and we are proud supporters of the British Army Cycling Union.
From the very start sustainability and environmental protection have been central principles of our Buzz Power Energy business. We started thinking how we could overcome some of the practical user issues common to conventional plastic energy sachets and at the same time reduce the environmental impact.
And so we launched the Eco Pack at the end of December 2022. Customers can now buy Buzz Power Energy in four sizes - our 30g Original Sachets, the 100g refillable Event Pack, the 270g Trail pack and a larger 550g Ultra Pouch for groups or intensive training.
The reusable 100g screw top Event pouch contains over three times as much carbohydrate as a typical energy gel sachet, and the 10mm spout is a convenient non-spill dispensing solution. The 100g pouch can be easily refilled from a larger pouch, available in 270g and 550g options, both of which come with free refill adaptors.
As well as reducing plastic usage by over 70% we also reduce our own costs, so we can pass the savings on to our customers. Buzz Power Energy Eco Pack prices are over 20% cheaper compared to the equivalent amount of Buzz Power Energy Original sachets, although many customers still prefer the convenience of an individual serve. Many of our customers use Buzz Power Energy sachets and Eco Packs to boost their pre-fuel breakfast or to make energy balls. The larger pouches are ideal for this and reduce waste.
We also took the opportunity to enhance the Buzz Power recipe with added Propolis. Propolis is a natural hive product and is widely considered to have concentrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Laboratory research indicates that propolis may also be effective in protecting the immune system.
Most recently, the Eco Packs were successfully trialled by our own champion triathlete Lizzie Stewart. Lizzie trained and competed with the 100g Eco Event Pack at the recent World Iron Man Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and although she was among the youngest in her class and suffering from Covid at the time finished an amazing group 17th, with a new personal best under her belt.
